What is scabies?
The scabies mite sometimes digs into the top layer of the skin and lays its eggs in the passages.
Scabies mites can be seen as small white thread-like changes on the skin, especially around the wrists and between the fingers.
What are the symptoms of scabies?
Around 2-3 weeks after infection, symptoms of scabies appear in the form of:
- Intense itching at night on the body
- Due to the itching, eczema and bumps appear
How is scabies contagious?
Scabies is transmitted through close physical contact and can therefore be transmitted through sexual contact.
How is scabies tested and treated?
Scabies is treated with a cream, which can be bought at the pharmacy or with a tablet on prescription from the doctor.
When treating with cream, rub the entire body from the jaw downwards into the cream.
The cream must sit on the skin for eight hours, after which it is washed off.
Clothes and bedding must also be washed. Sexual partners and members of the household must also be treated at the same time. Otherwise, you can get infected again.
After treatment, the skin may continue to itch for 2-3 weeks, without any signs that the treatment has not worked.
What are the consequences of scabies?
No consequences – infection with scabies can be quite bothersome.
