What is trichomonas?

Trichomonas is the term for an inflammation of the vagina caused by a parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis.
Ikke alle sexsygdomme giver symptomer

Worldwide, trichomonas is one of the most frequent sexually transmitted diseases. In Denmark, trichomonas is rare, with fewer than 100 registered cases per year, but a few years ago it was more common.

How is trichomonas transmitted?

Trichomonas is transmitted through sexual contact. Non-sexual transmission can happen in rare cases, as the parasite can survive for up to 45 minutes on toilet seats and towels.

It takes between 4-28 days from being infected until symptoms can appear.

People who are infected with trichomonas should avoid intercourse until the symptoms have disappeared after treatment.

What are the symptoms of trichomonas?

Between 50-90% of women infected with trichomonas experience symptoms. Amongst men however, only approximately 25% of those infected experience symptoms.

If you have a vagina:

  • Discharge from the vagina, which can be yellow-green or greyish and frothy
  • Burning when urinating
  • Red and irritated labia
  • The symptoms may be accompanied by pain/discomfort in the stomach

If you have a penis:

  • Discharge from the urethra
  • Burning feeling when urinating

What are the consequences of trichomonas?

No consequences – symptoms of infection with trichomonas can, however, be unpleasant and bothersome.

However, Trichomonas infection while pregnant is associated with an increased risk of preterm birth.

How is trichomonas tested and treated?

Medical history is combined with tests. The test consists of a swab from the vagina, cervix or urethra. Treatment of trichomonas is easy and effective and consists of tablets. Sexual partner(s) must also be treated. A study has shown that 70% of men with infected partners became infected themselves. The risk of infection from men to women is greater.

Samples for chlamydia and gonorrhea should be taken at the same time.

Alcohol must be avoided while on treatment, as it has an Antabuse-like effect.
